Mid-Wales & Elan Valley Trip

A few weeks ago Lynda bundled me into her car in an attempt to kidnap me; then she further threatened to leave me stranded in some remote and desolate part of Wales…  Ok, ok – so perhaps I’m bending the truth a little there but we did enjoy another trip through mid-Wales a few weeks back. It went something like this:

The route (in part).

From the south Wales area we headed north towards the picturesque area around Builth Wells.

Builth Wells has the distinction of having the only post box in the United Kingdom bearing the cypher of King Edward VIII, the uncrowned king whose abdication in 1936 caused a constitutional crisis. (Wikipedia)

Unfortunately we didn’t get a photograph of the post box… Anyways, along the way we were provided with ample opportunity to stop and enjoy the views in some [unexpected] mild and fine weather.

Heading towards Builth Wells and Rhyader.

At Builth Wells we decided to make a slight detour from the original route as Lynda suggested we take a look around the Elan Valley area; especially as the weather was so good and the tourist season was not yet upon us (in hindsight this turned out to be a very good idea as the places we visited in the Elan Valley were practically deserted). As a result we headed towards Rhyader along the A470 and from there we would pick up a route around Elan Valley (Elan Valley being part of the Cambrian Mountain area).

Touring around Elan Valley.

In Elan Valley.

In Elan Valley.

Elan Valley is often referred to as the “Welsh Lake District” and comparisons between itself and the English Lake District are certainly justifiable (at least by those who have been able to frequent and enjoy both).

The Welsh Lake District.

The Welsh Lake District.

The Welsh Lake District.

Having probably spent a little longer than we had anticpated in Elan Valley (Me? Too snap-happy? Noooo….) we rejoined the A483 and continued northwards towards Newtown, Welshpool, Oswestry and then Wrexham. By this time the evening sun had already begun to set so I took the opportunity to grab a few pictures through the car window.

Sharky does arty-farty.

Sunset on the Mid-Wales trip.

Sunset.

All in it was a fantastic day out and I think it’s fair to say that we both felt we’d made the most of the whole day! Another road trip to stick in the scrap book then, eh? :D

I have so much to do over the weekend… I don’t even want to think about it! I need to mow the lawns, remove the weeds from the flower beds, jet-wash the flagstones, etc. *sigh* I might leave it until another weekend!

*groan* Ok, if I must Lynda… But I’m not wicked so what gives?! Anyways, from what I’ve seen it looks pretty good as it is. And from what I’ve heard it sounds as if you had a fantastic time mowing your 45 degree lawn…
